U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker today announced that U.S. exports supported more than 11.3 million jobs in 2013, up 1.6 million jobs since 2009. A U.S. Department of Commerce report issued today releases the 2013 jobs-supported-by-exports number and also highlights revisions to earlier projections for export-related jobs. The data in the report show that exports now support more jobs than any time in the past 20 years.

“The strong correlation between exports and U.S. jobs is why the Department of Commerce is focused on helping American companies sell their goods and services all over the globe,” said U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker. “The fact is, 95 percent of worldwide consumers live outside U.S. borders, and for our businesses to grow and create jobs, we have to make it possible for them to reach new markets. As an Administration, we are committed to setting the conditions that promote trade and investment, and ensuring that exports continue to drive local, state, and national economies and create jobs.”

In 2013, every $1 billion of U.S. exports supported nearly 5,600 jobs. Goods exports supported 7.1 million jobs in 2013, up 1.1 million positions from 2009. Services exports supported 4.2 million jobs in 2013, which is a record for the noted 20 year period.

In 2010, President Obama launched the National Export Initiative in 2010 to sell more American goods and services to foreign markets. Since its launch, the United States has experienced four consecutive years of record exports, including nearly $2.3 trillion in 2013. Expanding trade and investment is a top priority of the Department of Commerce and a key pillar of the Department’s “Open for Business Agenda.”
