Throughout her career, Helen Greiner has been known for her visionary technological contributions that combine engineering and innovation to create new products that change the world we live in. “Engineers these days come in all different forms, genders, races, and you need that to add a diverse background to your products,” she said.

Helen is currently the CEO of CyPhy Works, Inc, a company that designs and delivers innovative robots.  In 1990, she co-founded iRobot, which has become the global leader of mobile robots, with the success of the Roomba™ Vacuuming Robot, the PackBot™, and SUGV Military Robots.

For Helen, inspiring the next generation of young people to work in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields is crucially important to our global, technology-driven economy, and she believes that there are significant opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship within these fields.

As a member of the Presidential Ambassadors for Global Entrepreneurship (PAGE) initiative, Helen hopes to reach these young people through her Signature Initiative. Over the course of the year, Helen will work to inspire young people to become engineers and then entrepreneurs through exposure to robotic technologies. Her speaking engagements include keynoting the 2015 Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders and the 2016 BotBall Championships.  Helen will follow up on these early exposure programs, and continue to foster technological literacy through her work as a trustee of the Boston Museum of Science and advisor to Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Watch Helen talk about the intersection of technology and entrepreneurship here.

About PAGE:

Launched in April 2014, PAGE was created to develop the next generation of entrepreneurs both at home and abroad. The initiative formed as a partnership among celebrated entrepreneurs, the White House, the Department of Commerce, and the U.S. Department of State. In the initiative’s first year, PAGE members utilized their knowledge, ideas, and talent to empower the next generation of entrepreneurs both at home and around the world to promote the program’s mission. As PAGE kicks off its second year, each ambassador has agreed to take the lead on his or her own signature initiative to address the global growing demand for engagement with America’s most respected and celebrated business creators.

Helen Greiner: My name's Helen Greiner. I'm the CEO of CyPhyWorks. I'm also the co-founder and former president and chairman of iRobot Corporation, the company that makes the really cool tactical robots and the Roomba vacuuming robot. My signature initiative is about getting kids involved in math and science. I build robots and robots are really the gateway drug to get kids involved in science and technology, because when kids see a robot and then once they've built a robot, they're not afraid of studying engineering. It also gives kids a -- you know, the experience of engineering being the creative field that it is and to counteract that stereotype of the horn-rimmed, lab jacket, very dry scientist. Because engineers these days come in all different forms, genders, races -- and you need that to add a diverse background to your products. The PAGE ambassadors would like to see opportunity worldwide and entrepreneurship -- creating jobs, uplifting a community, getting new products on the market is a huge part of that. I think innovation happens at small entrepreneurial companies and there's no reason it should just happen in the United States and Silicon Valley or in Boston. I'm in awe of the talent that's come into the PAGE program. Even today, I met some like-minded individuals who really believe in technological literacy, getting kids into science, technology and math, and that's an on-ramp to global entrepreneurship. It's a way to develop a scaleable business that could propagate around the world.
