U.S. Deputy Secretary of Commerce Bruce Andrews participated yesterday in an interactive tour at IBM’s Customer Experience Center in Delhi as part of this week’s Smart Cities Infrastructure Business Development trade mission.

The Customer Service Center uses interactive LED displays and touch-screen technology to showcase its various urban infrastructure solutions from around the world. Joined by Director of the U.S. Trade and Development Agency Lee Zak and Vice President of Global Business Development at the Export-Import Bank Ray Ellis, Deputy Secretary  Andrews had the opportunity to learn more about IBM’s smart city projects in India.

India’s ambitious environmental goals create tremendous opportunities for American companies. Estimates for infrastructure development in India are upwards of $2 trillion over the next decade. Since the joint announcement by Prime Minister Modi and President Obama that U.S. industry would take the lead on three Indian Smart cities, the U.S. Department of Commerce has worked closely with our Indian colleagues and our U.S. Government partners to move these cities forward.

This week’s trade mission is another symbol of the U.S. Government’s commitment to building smart cities in India. Deputy Secretary Andrews is joined on the trip by representatives from 18 leading American companies – all of whom have a proven track record of deploying clean energy and environmental technologies all over the globe.

While in Delhi, the delegation met with representatives from the Indian Government and participated in events with the American Chamber of Commerce in India, Federal of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the U.S.-India Business Council, and the Indian Chamber of Commerce. After touring the IBM facility, they flew to Mumbai where the entire delegation will participate in the 3rd Smart Cities Summit.
