Steve Haro was confirmed by the United States Senate as the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs on December 16, 2015.

Prior to his nomination to serve at the Department of Commerce, Haro was the Chief of Staff to U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM) from 2013 to 2015, and Heinrich’s Chief of Staff in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2008 to 2012. In 2013, Haro was named by the Huffington Post as one of the most influential Hispanics on Capitol Hill. In 2008, Haro was the Western Regional Political Director and National Hispanic Outreach Coordinator for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. From 2001 to 2008, he served in various capacities including Communications Director, Legislative Director and Senior Adviser for U.S. Representative Xavier Becerra (D-CA). In 2007, Hispanic Business Magazine named him to its prestigious Top 100 Most Influential Hispanics in the U.S. list. In 2004, Haro took a leave of absence from Rep. Becerra’s staff to serve as the Colorado Communications Director for the John Kerry for President campaign. Haro began his career as the public affairs manager in the Los Angeles office of the national public relations firm, The MWW Group.

Haro received his M.A. and B.A. from Loyola University Chicago. He, his wife and his twin daughters live in Arlington, Virginia.
