Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary marking the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation in 1954 to change the name to Veterans Day as a way to honor those who served in all American wars.

As a professor of engineering, I see a big gap between university research and industry.  One way to bridge this gap is to educate researchers about the importance of intellectual property (IP) in moving their ideas to industry.  About three years ago, I had a student who developed an app for deterring break-ins by text message. The U.S. economy is now in its eighth year of economic expansion. On average, the economy has grown at an annualized rate of 2 percent these past seven years. Thanks to many economic policies implemented since the financial crisis, the economy is on solid footing and is now enjoying the fourth longest period of expansion on record dating back to the mid-1800s.
