Data, you might say, is the innovation currency of the Digital Age.  Data solutions surround us – like when we’re in the backseat of an Uber browsing LinkedIn while the driver uses Waze for the best route while streaming Pandora on the radio.  Every day innovators are using public and private data to dream up and deliver new customer solutions.  And we’re just at the beginning. 

The U.S. Census Bureau’s Innovation and Operational Efficiency (IOE) program exemplifies operational excellence. Begun in 2010 by former Census Bureau Director Robert Groves, the program has resulted in nearly $46 million in combined savings and cost avoidance to U.S. taxpayers. The idea behind IOE is to leverage employee creativity and innovation toward cost savings and operational efficiency.

Fun fact: The world’s premier weather watcher, storm chaser and climate monitor – aka, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration – gathers enough data every single day to fill the Library of Congress twice. The public also owns countless other terabytes of data that Commerce produces every day: Economic data, from jobs to paychecks to the products and services we make, provide and sell. 

This week, Secretary Penny Pritzker traveled to Colorado to participate in several events highlighting the efforts and successes of the United States Department of Commerce. While there, she was a guest speaker at an Innovation Roundtable hosted by Representative Ed Perlmutter (D-CO), attended the second the Second Anniversary of the U.S.

Yesterday marked the first day of the 7th Annual Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES), held at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA. NOAA’s first space weather satellite, DSCOVR, has completed instrument validation and will go operational on July 27, when it will take over the role of monitoring potentially damaging space weather storms as they approach Earth.
