May is World Trade Month. Every year at this time, we acknowledge the importance of trade and investment, and reiterate our commitment to the workers and businesses that sustain our country’s competitive advantages. And given the records we achieved last year, this World Trade Month offers an excellent opportunity to reflect on how trade and investment lifts the U.S. economy.

As Colin Parris, Vice President of Software Research at General Electric, reflected on his participation in the inaugural Commerce Data Advisory Council (CDAC) he said, “I think CDAC can achieve (things) that could be monumental towards the growth of data in the U.S. and the relevance of the U.S. as a data power.”

Today, millions of children across the country participated in Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day. As a part of this effort, and in the spirit of President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper Initiative, the Department of Commerce partnered with the YMCA’s Full Circle Mentoring Program to welcome a group of middle school students to learn about a day in the life of the agency.

The Department of Commerce and Department of Energy’s 2015 joint business development trade mission to China marks SolarReserve’s third participation in a remarkably well-organized and constructive trade mission led by US Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker. SolarReserve team members previously attended trade missions to the Middle East and West Africa.

In 2014, two daredevils broke into a construction site and climbed to the top of the second tallest building in the world: the Shanghai Tower. You may recognize it from their vertigo-inducing viral video, which leaves no doubt that the Tower is tall. What it doesn’t show is how much American businesses have had an impact on making the structure one of the greenest large buildings in the world.
