October is “Manufacturing Month” in Connecticut and throughout Pratt & Whitney, a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of jet aircraft engines. We’re celebrating all month because of our rich history and tradition, as well as because we’re excited about our future, which will see a ramp-up in engine production not seen for more than several decades.

Today, Census Bureau officials are meeting with representatives from the Midwest Alliance of Sovereign Tribes in Minnesota to discuss issues that affect American Indian and Alaska Native communities (AIAN) ahead of the 2020 Census. This is a critical part of our overall communication and outreach efforts directed at ensuring an accurate, cost-effective population count in 2020.

NOAA has upgraded nowCOAST, a GIS-based online map service providing more frequently updated ocean observations along with coastal and marine weather forecasts. The new version, which went live on September 21, also offers a visual point-and-click access to 60 NOAA data products and services. Users can reach the site at nowcoast.noaa.gov.

With the negotiations for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) completed, today is an important day for American businesses and workers. As someone who works to support manufacturing in the United States, I’m constantly amazed by the remarkable number of opportunities manufacturing offers to job-seekers, communities and the nation. I also find it remarkable how manufacturing seems to be such a well-kept secret; the general public has some pretty big misconceptions about what it means to work in manufacturing.

As the summer comes to an end, millions of students are returning to campuses all over the country. A good portion of these students are coming from abroad. Did you know that the tuition and living expenses of foreign students make up an important services export?
