I am a patent examiner, so I review, evaluate and determine the outcome and patentability of applications in electrophotography, also known as printers. I decided to join the USPTO because I was intrigued by the agency’s mission and the vast opportunities it presented. I wanted to be a part of this complex world providing exclusive rights to new, novel inventions.

Entrepreneurship is a driving force in the new economy. While debates continue around whether entrepreneurs are born or can be created, one thing is clear: people learn a great deal from the experiences of others. Entrepreneurs especially learn a great deal “on the job” and often find inspiration and mentorship from those who have “been there, done that.”

In early 2015, the Buffalo Niagara Partnership (BNP), western NY’s largest business advocacy group, asked me to consider taking part in a “learning network” project. The BNP, with the help of the Buffalo Community Foundation, would be applying and competing with other communities to be a part of this "learning network" focused on workforce initiatives.

Last week, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker helped lay the foundation for a new chapter of relations between the United States and Cuba after 50 years of broken commercial and diplomatic ties. On October 6-7, Secretary Pritzker became the second U.S. cabinet official to travel to Cuba since President Obama called for the re-establishment of diplomatic relations.

I was born in California but grew up mostly in a college town in Montana. I am fortunate to have two amazing parents who both pushed me to work hard and supported me while I follow my passions. My passions led me to pursue an undergraduate degree in music and then to change tracks to pursue a Master’s degree in foreign policy and a PhD in global health policy.
