Today we remember the unspeakable evil of the Holocaust — a horror that resulted in the murder of men, women, and children throughout Europe, including 6 million Jews, and millions of Roma and others. 6 million is an impossible number to comprehend. We try to intellectualize the quantity, but we cannot begin to grasp the breadth of humanity behind that figure. And yet we must never forget.

Earlier this week, Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker and German Federal Minister of Education and Research Johanna Wanka came together at the Hannover Messe for a panel discussion on how the United States and Germany can collaborate on expanding apprenticeship. On Sunday, April 24, President Barack Obama and U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker arrived in Germany to kick off the 2016 Hannover Messe, the world’s largest industrial trade fair. For the first time since the fair’s inception in 1947, the United States served as the official partner country.

The arrival of high-ranking American visitors is not an everyday affair in Germany – even less so in the city of Hannover. Thus, we are all excited that President Obama will join Chancellor Merkel for the opening ceremony of the Hannover Messe, marking the first time a U.S. president will participate in the world’s largest trade show for industrial technology.

We became aware of the opportunity to participate in the Hannover Messe trade fair through our valuable relationships with the U.S. Commerce Service and the West Virginia Development Office. Given the size and prestige of Hannover Messe – along with the United States being 2016’s partner country - we felt this opportunity was too good to pass up.

While the majority of our business is domestic (within the United States), a fair portion of our business is done overseas. Other companies that are looking into exporting to begin by researching the rules and regulations associated with exporting. Every country has its own requirements as far as receiving products and the kinds of products that can be received.

We have been exporting for over 12 years. We actually began as a company due to a licensing of explosive welding technology from a company in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. We have equipment in and have performed services in: Trinidad, Venezuela, Australia, Malaysia, Guatemala, El Salvador, Saudi Arabia, Canada and Bahamas.

We have been increasing our sales in those markets, therefore we find out the changes on those markets are continuous and even the rules for export are almost the same everywhere we need to pay attention to the particular rules and contractual laws applicable to every Country which make difficult the competitiveness.

Our advice to other American companies looking to start exporting is to develop an in-depth plan or strategy. There are abundant resources available through the US Commercial Service, Department of Commerce, foreign trade representatives, state economic development agencies and others to help them better analyze export and import data.

Liberty Pumps started exporting outside of North America toward the end of 2010. Today, we export to Mexico, Central America, Caribbean, and most LATAM countries. We also export to North Korea, Philippines, China and Vietnam. We have recently begun to export to several EU countries including Sweden, UK, the Netherlands, and Spain.

Because international sales make up more than half of our activity, exporting has been integral in the success of our business. Without our international operations, our company would not survive. Even though we are a very small company, we are very active internationally. We believe that companies that can effectively compete domestically and also compete internationally.

On Monday, April 4, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker traveled to Brooklyn to learn about the revival of the local manufacturing industry. Secretary Pritzker visited Industry City, an innovative manufacturing district in Brooklyn, to meet with local entrepreneurs and hear about what it is like to do business in New York’s fastest growing borough.

I strongly recommend that all U.S. manufacturers build a website and develop a presence on the internet so that potential international buyers can easily find them. As manufacturers gain experience with international sales and shipments, it would be beneficial for them to expand their marketing efforts to include international trade shows and discussions with the resources provided by the U.S.
