On July 21, 2016, the Department of Commerce, eBay, New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), and the Global Innovation Forum joined forces to host a forum for startups and small businesses that addressed the opportunities and challenges to going global, such as the availability of key federal and local government resources and how to protect their intellectual property overseas.

On August 4, Secretary Pritzker traveled to Boulder, Colorado to participate in a Startup Day Across America event at Black Lab Sports and promote entrepreneurship. Secretary Pritzker had the opportunity to meet with representatives from 16 local startups, including Zybek Sports, iSplack, TredLite, and Edntech, and observe demonstrations of their innovative products.

On Thursday, July 21, exactly 209 years to the day that President Thomas Jefferson approved Ferdinand Rudolph Hassler’s plan to conduct a survey of our new nation’s coastlines, Secretary Pritzker became the first sitting Secretary of Commerce to attend a NOAA change-of-command ceremony for Ferdinand’s namesake ship in Norfolk, Virginia. The U.S. Census Bureau’s Innovation and Operational Efficiency (IOE) program exemplifies operational excellence. Begun in 2010 by former Census Bureau Director Robert Groves, the program has resulted in nearly $46 million in combined savings and cost avoidance to U.S. taxpayers. The idea behind IOE is to leverage employee creativity and innovation toward cost savings and operational efficiency.

Greenhouse gases, or GHGs as we call them, stream out of power plants, seep out of landfills, flow from vehicle traffic and rise from commercial buildings and homes. Emissions of carbon dioxide, methane and other GHGs are nearly ubiquitous, and this makes them difficult to measure.

First, in light of the recent tragedy at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, I ask that readers reflect on how much work is still left to do to achieve true equality in the U.S, especially for LGBT people of color. There remain many things beyond the right to marry that must be addressed to ensure every part of the L-G-B-T community is free to live safe and happy lives.

Last year, in a 5-4 decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, the Supreme Court ruled against the Defense of Marriage Act and took a historic step in the march towards equality by declaring that same sex couples had the right to marry and simply put – love won.

Yesterday marked the first day of the 7th Annual Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES), held at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA. Following the last two successful Summits in Morocco and Kenya, GES 2016 came to Silicon Valley in order to highlight the success of thousands of firms in the area that exemplify America’s entrepreneurial spirit.
